Oscars 2024: The records broken by Emma Stone, Cillian Murphy, and more

The 96th Academy Awards aired on March 10, with Oppenheimer and Poor Things dominating

    A night to remember, the 96th Academy Awards saw plenty of record-breaking wins as Emma Stone, Cillian Murphy and more made history. In an impressive feat, reigned supreme with seven wins, while followed closely with four. and were also victorious, taking home one trophy each. 

    Now that the winners have been announced, we're unpacking the records broken by last night's Oscar recipients. Here's why it was such a poignant evening for the stars...

    Crowned Best Actor at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and SAG Awards, fans were convinced that Cillian Murphy would take home the Oscar this year, and now that he has he's officially made history, becoming the first Irish-born individual to triumph in the category. "I'm a little overwhelmed," he told the audience. "I'm a very proud Irishman standing up here tonight." 

    As for Emma Stone, who bagged Best Actress for , the 35-year-old has become the 27th actor to win two Oscars in leading categories (her first win came in 2019 for ). Holding back tears, she said, "This is really overwhelming," and announced that she shared the award with her fellow nominees: Lily Gladstone, Carey Mulligan, Annette Bening and Sandra Hüller. 

    Emma, meanwhile, has also become the second actor ever to win an acting and producing Oscar in one night (as a producer on Poor Things). She follows in the footsteps of Frances McDormand, who did so in 2021, with wins in Best Picture and Best Actress for .

Joking that the award would help her through her "mid-life crisis," the award-winner explained how she'd worked on the story with her peers during the Coronavirus lockdown.
