*Major spoilers for Netflix’s I Care a Lot ahead*
I Care a Lot Rosamund Pike stars as protagonist Marla Grayson, an amoral legal guardian wearing fabulous suits and sporting the neatest bob of recent film history.
When Marla tries to exploit a wealthy elder called Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest) she doesn’t know the woman has powerful ties with the Russian mafia.
At one point in the film by J Blakeson, powerful Russian boss Roman Lunyov (Peter Dinklage) kidnaps Marla and subsequently drugs her and puts her in a car crashing into a lake. The Gone Girl actress has walked fans through the scene shot-by-shot in a newly released Netflix clip.
“In this scene you are watching the demise of a very put-together woman,” Pike said.
“She, having been the predator, is now the prey,” she added.
Pike explained that Marla has been chloroformed and “filled with vodka” through a nasal tube.
“I really relish this sequence because it’s wordless and I love exploring the physical dimension of Marla’s need to win,” Pike said.
Two of Lunyov’s people place Marla in the car, jamming a bottle of vodka in-between her thigh and the steering wheel to keep her foot on the accelerator.
“The only bit of this sequence that I was not present for was when the car rolls down the hill and crashes through the undergrowth,” Pike said.
“I was not in the car at that point. We did a close-up later of me kinda coming around and she’s not really sure where she is,” she added.
Before crashing into the lake, Marla wakes up to an immediate danger.
“And suddenly she realizes she’s in a car and it’s at that point that she puts on the brake and is already hurdling over the edge of the cliff,” the actress continued.
Pike did most of her own stunts in the scene, including the panicky sequence where she tries to escape from the sinking car, filmed in a water tank at Pinewood Studios in London.
The actress, who’s nominated for a Golden Globe for the role of Marla, explained she spent a day of orientation to feel comfortable in the tank.
“And you’re told exactly how to feel completely at ease and relaxed underwater, how to use the oxygen, how to use the mask,” she said.
“And then they say, ‘But we’re not goanna do any of that,’” she added.
